My fitness journey started before I even learned how to multiply. I was an extremely hyperactive child as a kid and my parents we’re struggling to figure our how to manage my constant fits of movement and fidgeting. At 5 years old I was already learning how to swim. At 7 I was thrown into a karate dojo and found myself throwing punches and kicking wooden boards after kinder-garden. Of course at the time, I didn’t really grasp the concept of fitness, health and body coordination, I was simply going through the motions of what these adults we’re putting me through. My first passion for sports and exercise was ignited when I entered first grade and stayed after-school for soccer practice. I sucked, I was no where near a naturally born skilled player, but I had a lot of energy. I ran and ran and ran until my lungs couldn’t help me anymore. I was placed in second team out of 3 (A, B, and C). Team A held the most skilled players, I was intimidated by their ability to handle a ball with such skill, they had always had their favorite team’s jersey and were bigger and stronger. Team B had players like me who had potential but didn’t quite make the first team, we were nervous kids scared to stand up to the plate, I was scared to fuck up and be laughed at. Team C had the crappy players, those who couldn’t kick a ball if their life depended on it. These are the kids who’s parents wish so hard that they would become professional athletes when deep down all they want to do is be artistic and creative. Don’t ask me how I scored my first goal, I don’t even remember, I think I was struck in the face by a long ball and magically the ball went into the net. The only thing I recall is the parents at the bleachers screaming in joy and my teammates holding me up and congratulating me. After that first taste of empowerment, the feeling of scoring, I was hooked. I continued to practice as the months went by and managed to make the A team by third grade. I quickly became more confident at asking for the ball, standing up against stronger and taller players, using my skill and savviness to defeat them. My…
